Life can be tough. That’s, well, life. But certain delights—pulling up to an intersection right as the light turns green, cracking an egg with two yolks, scoring a great deal on an item you’ve really wanted—make the experience lighter. We can’t help with the former two, but if you want a deal, you’ve come to the right place. Below we’ve rounded up the biggest, best discounts on some of our favorite Wirecutter-approved items so that on this day, at least, you can win.
The best wireless earbuds under $100
Working out is hard enough—make the experience just a bit better with comfortable, water-resistant earbuds. This Skullcandy pair, our budget pick from testing, features the best sound for its price, a five-hour battery life, and Tile integration. And considering that these earbuds are at the lowest price we’ve seen them for, it’s a great time to buy: The pair even comes with a two-year warranty and eligibility for Skullcandy’s lost-earbud exchange program.
Bright felt-tip pens
Paper Mate Flair Felt-Tip Pens are featured in our guide to the best school supplies, but they’re really a great tool for anyone who enjoys writing colorfully. (Taking notes at work is infinitely more fun when they can make a rainbow on the page.) The pens also dry quickly, making them a forgiving writing utensil for those still developing their penmanship or those who like to doodle at meetings. This is a good deal for a pack of 20 assorted colors, and you can add it to an order totaling over $35 for free shipping.
A meditation app for this moment
Calm Meditation App (12-Month Premium Subscription)
Deal price: $35; street price: $70
Read our review of the best meditation apps.
Not to be rude to 2020, but for the most part, it has been pretty stressful. (Other words that come to mind: soul crushing, maddening, and utterly impossible.) Give yourself or your loved one a little relief with a great meditation app. Calm will likely appeal to more experienced practitioners who don’t need or want as much guidance, since the sessions are a little less structured than on similar apps. The subscription also gives you access to a few other bonuses, such as sleep guidance and ambient music.
Smart home security
If you’ve been wanting to invest in a home security system, one of our favorites is available at the lowest price we’ve ever seen. The Wyze Smart Home Starter Pack comes with two of our top plug-in smart outlets, our budget indoor security camera (the older V2 model), three of our budget smart LED light bulbs, two Contact Sensors, a Motion Sensor, and a Wyze Sensor Bridge. Though the system isn’t compatible with many other smart devices, the kit does work with a Google Nest Mini, so you can control it all by voice.
Vibrant, colorful lighting
Much more exciting than just a standard light bulb, a smart bulb allows you (or your lucky gift recipient) to control when lights turn on and off using an app or just the sound of your voice. This Philips Hue two-pack, a variant of our smart LED light bulb upgrade pick, is down to just $15 with store pickup. You need a hub to get the most out of these bulbs, so this deal is best for existing or prospective Hue owners.
Nothing is more satisfying than cracking open a new book and just letting it wash over you, laughing or crying or waiting for the big reveal, wishing you had just a little bit more when you’re finished. With a Book of the Month Subscription Box, you’ll receive a new story to start every month. Currently, you can get your first book for just $5 with the code READUP before the monthly fee goes back to $15. The books span a range of genres and are released during the month in which they’re included.
Pack it up
No matter your daily commute, a good bag can keep all your gear organized and ready to go. The Timbuk2 Convertible Backpack Tote is stylish and practical, allowing you to switch between a tote bag and a backpack whenever you need. This pick is at the lowest we’ve ever seen, making it a worthy buy, even if your commute is still from your bedroom to the couch.
An instant classic
A good t-shirt can be hard to find, which is why we’ve been rigorously testing them for our upcoming white t-shirt guide. One of our picks, the J.Crew Broken-In Short-Sleeve T-Shirt, is currently down to $17 with the code CYBER. You can also snag free shipping with a free J.Crew Rewards account. J. Crew often offers site-wide sales (as it’s currently doing), but this is one of the lowest we’ve seen, with 50 percent off site-wide and an extra 10 percent off with the code CYBER.
Good entry-level workout headphones
If you’re curious about trying workout headphones, but don’t want to spend much, you can’t beat this price on the Koss FitClips. A budget pick from our guide to workout headphones, the FitClips come with a wire, which may be better for those who never remember to charge their Bluetooth devices (but might not appeal to you if you don’t like the feeling of cords dangling around your neck). They sound far better than you’d imagine for such a cheap pair, but the microphone isn’t great. But who wants to talk while they workout, anyway?
Masks they’ll actually wear
The best face mask for kids is going to be the one they’ll wear (without throwing a tantrum!). In our testing, we found that Gap Kids’ three-layer face masks fit that bill. Soft and breathable, the masks fit a range of ages (our testers ran between ages 3 and 9), thanks to a nose-bridge wire and longer ear loops, and they come in enough prints and color options that you should be able to find at least a few the kid in your life will wear. A three-pack is selling for just $7 with in store-pick up.
Durable cotton jammies
The right set of pajamas can make a nighttime ritual even more pleasurable for kids. We love Hanna Andersson’s sets: made from soft, organic cotton, they’re available in several patterns and sizes (including for adults and even dogs, should you want to get the whole family matching pairs) and our long-term testers report that they hold up especially well over years of wash and wear. They’re now down to $22 in six patterns and $25 in five.
An easy-to-clean water bottle
Takeya Actives Kids Insulated Water Bottle With Straw Lid (14 ounces)
Deal price: $11 with code HOLIDAY30; street price: $25
Read our review of the best kids water bottles.
The best water bottle for kids is the easiest water bottle for grown-ups to clean (and the least likely to break, lose parts to, or spill). For all that, we recommend the Takeya Actives Kids With Straw Lid: of our picks, it’s the easiest to take apart and assemble for cleaning (though only the plastic top can be machine-washed), its double walled body keeps drinks cold for hours, and its larger capacity fits more for your kid to drink. At just $11 with the promo code HOLIDAY30, it’s now the most affordable of all our picks.
Inspiration for young minds
When I was a kid, I poured over issues of Us Weekly magazine, ranking the “Who wore it better” column with my sister and debating whether the stars really were “just like us!” I turned out … fine, but you can probably do better for your kids: get them Bravery magazine instead. Perfect for elementary school aged children, each beautifully produced issue is devoted to a female role model and includes related DIY projects and activities (and it will absolutely never include a “hot diet tip”). Use code MERRY2020 to get your first magazine for only $9. The remaining three (released quarterly) will revert to the normal $18 price per magazine, so you’ll need to cancel your subscription if you’re not interested in receiving more.
An all-season rain jacket
If you don’t like walking in the cold, and you don’t like walking in the rain, you probably really don’t like walking in the cold AND the rain. Luckily, we have the perfect sartorial solution: the Eddie Bauer Girl on the Go is our insulated women’s raincoat pick and it’s now available for just $115. A detachable insulation layer means this jacket works as a comfy raincoat or winter coat. All of our testers thought the style was flattering thanks to the wide size range.
A cell phone plan for the budget minded
For those looking to tighten up their budget, cutting what you spend on a cell phone plan makes a big impact. As a budget option, we like Mint Mobile. They’re currently offering three months free for those who buy any tier 3-month plan. Their cheapest plan starts at just $15 per month for 3GB data with 5G and 4G LTE coverage (so you’ll only pay $45 for a total of 6 months). Mint offers unlimited nationwide talk and text through T-mobile’s network, too. The plan does come with down sides. You won’t get in-person support and you may see slower connection speeds compared to official T-mobile members. But if you already have an unlocked phone, this deal can save you a lot.
More deals we love that are at least 40% off:
If you already have an Amazon Echo and are looking to extend Alexa to other parts of your home (for sing-along showers, white noise naps, or cooking companionship, perhaps) the Echo Dot speaker is the best affordable option. It doesn’t offer the same sound quality as the standard Echo, but it’s absolutely fine for playing music when you don’t need to fill an entire room, and you can also use it to make calls and send messages. It listens just as well as the full-size Echo and comes in several fun colors.
The Jabra Elite 85h are our favorite Bluetooth headphones thanks to their comfortable fit and intuitive operation (really, their obvious pairing and clear controls make them easy-to-use even for the tech-averse). And they are versatile performers, offering great sound, clear calls, active noise cancelling, long battery life, and water resistance. If you’re looking for a new pair of over-ear headphones, this is a great chance to save; they’re currently available at nearly the lowest price we’ve even seen them marked.
If you travel for work, or hope to travel for work again after the pandemic, the Topo Designs Travel Bag 30L is our pick for document organization in our guide to the best carry-on travel bags. Its open interior makes packing easy, and its front pockets and holders neatly carry books, papers, and miscellaneous items. But it’s still useful as an everyday backpack, due to its small size and minimal external features.
Ring Alarm 10-Piece Home Security System (2nd Gen)
Deal price: $130; street price: $230
Read our review of the best home security system.
Especially while you’re spending more time at home than ever before, it’s important to feel safe there. Our budget pick in our guide to the best home security system, the Ring Alarm 10-Piece Home Security System (2nd Gen) is an easy-to-use DIY security system with the least expensive live-monitoring plan ($10 per month) and it’s now available at an even greater price for Costco members. This specific setup includes a base station and keypad, a range extender, a motion detector, and six contact sensors. Although we don’t recommend Ring cameras anymore, the Ring Alarm system remains an easy-to-use choice for people who want no-contract 24/7 monitoring that doesn’t eat a hole in their pockets.
Right now, you can snag our useful smart display without the camera pick, the Google Nest Hub, for $50. This is the lowest price we’ve seen for this pick, which offers most of the same smart home capabilities as the Hub Max, so if you’re looking for a compact smart display that doesn’t have a built-in camera, this is a great opportunity to save.
For music anywhere you need it—a socially distanced porch hang, a sing-along shower, a solo bedroom-karaoke session—a good Bluetooth speaker can supply it. Though we didn’t like the UE Megaboom 3 quite so much as our other picks from testing, it still offers good enough sound quality and a rugged body that will hold up to inevitable drops and bumps, especially for the price (currently the lowest we’ve ever seen it).
A “business laptop” feels like a silly concept, but for anyone who travels for work it’s important to have a lightweight device that’s sturdy enough to withstand plenty of use. We’ve tested dozens of them over the years, and HP’s EliteBook 840 G7 is the best for most people: It has plenty of ports, it offers all-day battery life, and it comes with a great, reliable keyboard and trackpad.
The days are blurring together this year (I write, on March 291st), and many people aren’t able to spend time with their loved ones in the usual ways. So a custom calendar featuring photos of family or friends is an extra-special gift for these times. For our staff, Shutterfly has been one of the preferred methods of doing this. Uploading images is easy with its preset templates, and Shutterfly will save birthdays, anniversaries, and other important dates to add, automatically, to next year’s edition.
Among the oldest trick questions in history, there is only one acceptable answer to “Boxers or briefs?” and that is, of course, both: boxer briefs. Among the best ones that we’ve found from testing are Gap’s 5″ Boxer Briefs. They don’t include some of the more detailed features or high end construction of our more expensive picks, but they are as comfortable as your favorite T-shirt, well built, and come in several sizes and patterns.
Little fingers need big protection, and REI’s CO-op Timber Mountain Gloves can provide it.
A long-time staff favorite, they have handy built-in arm tethers and cinch at the wrist to stay secure and warm, and they’re waterproof so even after hours of building snowmen your kid will stay cozy.
Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter Tech Packing Cube Set (2-Piece)
Deal price: $21; street price: $40
Read our review of the best packing cubes.
Like so much else in life, for travelling, too, a bit of upfront organization will save you time and frustration. For that, we recommend packing cubes to keep your possessions in order and easy to access. After four year of testing, the best ones we’ve found for the job are Eagle Creek’s Pack-It Specter Tech Packing Cube Set. The simple yet functional design and excellent build quality set these apart from the competition, and they’ll add barely any weight to your luggage.
