Apple HomePod

A thrilling speaker, but not for everyone

It’s the best-sounding smart speaker we’ve heard, and it allows easier Siri control over your HomeKit system, but it still has room to improve.

Overall, the HomePod is neither as versatile nor as affordable as most of its competitors, and it’s not compatible with as many non-Apple devices. The HomePod is likely to be updated with more features and perhaps more compatibility—for example, the multiroom speaker capability originally announced as part of the HomePod was added nearly nine months after its release. But Apple isn’t offering a timeline or roadmap for updates, so anyone buying a HomePod now is taking a gamble. In the meantime, you should first understand specifically what the HomePod is not able to do. Anyone with experience using Alexa or Google Assistant will quickly find that many of their preferences and habits and rituals—listening to an Internet radio station, or Spotify, or Pandora, or interacting with certain types of smart-home devices—may be dramatically different and so ultimately disappointing. One other thing: We quickly discovered through testing that the HomePod leaves prominent white rings on unprotected wood, a potentially disastrous problem for owners of fine furniture. Although Apple insists that these marks are easily wiped away, it’s still something to consider.
