Are Away Carry-Ons Worth the Hype?

Away The Carry-On

Away The Carry-On

The best hard-sided carry-on suitcase

This is a great-looking, resilient piece of hard-sided luggage, with top-of-the-line components—including YKK zippers and the smoothest wheels we tested—at a decent price.

Buying Options

$225 from Away

If you want the look and lighter weight of a hard-sided bag, the Away Carry-On is our choice. Weighing 7.6 pounds and able to hold nearly 40 liters, this bag stood out among competitors for its high-end components, such as sturdy YKK zippers and the best-rolling wheels of any bag we tested. We liked the wide array of available colors and the strong yet flexible polycarbonate shell. Polycarbonate shells will always show more wear than soft-sided luggage. But after using multiple models over three years, our testers found that the Away had endured most of the trials of traveling, with only a few scratches. Away bags are also backed by a lifetime limited warranty, which covers you for cracks in the shell and any broken hardware (wheels, handles, and zippers).

Muji Adjustable Handle Suitcase

Muji Adjustable Handle Suitcase

Lower price; much shorter handle

The Muji has a similarly sleek look to the Away Carry-On, and it holds nearly as much, but its short handle is difficult, if not impossible, to use if you’re taller than 5 feet, 5 inches.

Buying Options

$160 from Muji

The Muji Adjustable Handle Suitcase looks and feels similar to the Away Carry-On, and it offers, for less money, many of the same advantages as that suitcase: a high-quality polycarbonate shell; a capacity nearly matching that of the Away; and smoothly rolling wheels that were second best only to the Away’s. It does have a shorter handle, which taller travelers may find challenging to use, and it comes in fewer colors. It also doesn’t come with a warranty, apart from Muji’s blanket policy that says you have to notify customer service online “within 7 days of arrival if package found with visible damages or missing merchandise for full refund.”
