We have an Xbox Series X and an Xbox Series S on hand, and we’ll update this article with our hands-on impressions and buying recommendations soon. But right now we can share some advice and details that are already clear before launch day. We also have answers to the most frequently asked questions below.
For anyone who hasn’t owned a console in a while, it may not be obvious which one makes more sense for you or which one to give as a gift. And if you have an older console you’re satisfied with, upgrading now may not even be worth the effort. But there are a couple of situations where the decision might be easier to make.
First, if you have a big collection of physical Xbox One, Xbox 360, or original-Xbox games, if you want to watch 4K Blu-ray discs on your console, or if you want the best graphics and performance possible, you should get the Xbox Series X. It has a disc drive, which the Series S lacks, plus more advanced graphics hardware and more storage.
On the other hand, if you don’t have a 4K TV (and won’t buy one soon), if space in your entertainment center is a concern, or if you don’t want to spend $500 on a new console, stick to the Xbox Series S. It’s also a great price-conscious choice for kids, especially when you pair it with the Xbox Game Pass service, which can provide a steady stream of quality titles without any additional purchases.
If that doesn’t make it easier for you to decide, below we break down the differences we know about before the launch date.
