We wanted to be able to answer that question for ourselves and for anyone else thinking of making an IKEA purchase central to the kitchen overhaul of their dreams. And we wanted to find out whether this was even a good idea in the first place. To learn more about this multi-part shopping process—and to find out the questions that homeowners should be ready to answer when heading into the project—we spoke with several experts in this field. We started with Beaulieu Cabinetry’s David Beaulieu Jr., a second-generation custom cabinetmaker who designs and installs a lot of IKEA kitchens, along with his custom work. We also spoke with Georgi Stoyanov, of Virginia Kitchens, a company that designs, assembles, and installs IKEA kitchens. And Kathleen Wilbur, kitchen business leader at IKEA, offered a walk-through of the buying process. We also read a lot of individual buyers’ firsthand experiences with the IKEA system and took a close look at IKEA’s step-by-step guide to buying a kitchen. Personally, I’m a former contractor with 10 years of experience in high-end residential remodels in the Boston area, and that background informed how I reported and interviewed experts for this guide.
