There are many reasons to love Costco: the inflation-immune $1.50 hot dog combo, the delightfully excessive 4-pound pack of Nutella, the mystique of the strangely exquisite Kirkland Signature Vodka (is it really Grey Goose?).
But there’s one thing about Costco that baffles me: the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi.
You can find an abundance of deals at Costco—but this co-branded credit card is not one of them. The card offers only a meh cash-back rate of 2% at Costco. Compare that with the rates of similar branded cards for Target and Amazon, which offer as much as 5% back at their respective stores. (Citi didn’t respond to our repeated requests for comment on the Costco Anywhere Visa Card’s point structure.)
The Costco Anywhere Visa Card isn’t a bad credit card overall, and honestly, 2% back on Costco purchases isn’t the worst deal you can find.
Wirecutter recommends it in our guide to the best gas credit cards. It’s the card I use at gas stations. And it can be great for travel and dining if you don’t spend enough to justify getting a higher-end travel or dining card. But it got us thinking: Why do some co-branded cards not offer the best deal on their own brands?
