GoPro Hero8 Black

GoPro Hero8 Black

The best action camera

It’s the raddest action camera ever made, with an improved mount design, better stabilization, and even sicker hyperlapses. Video quality is still best in class.

The GoPro Hero8 Black is the latest GoPro, which is all many people need to know before buying it. But after more than 20 hours of testing, we can confirm that it’s also the best action camera we’ve ever tested. Its 4K, 60 frames-per-second footage is best-in-class, and it now goes up to a 100 mbps bit rate for even smoother, sharper results. The new HyperSmooth 2.0 stabilization blew our minds with a Boost mode that smoothed out violent shakes and rolls that the other tested cameras couldn’t handle. TimeWarp 2.0 (video) was crazy-fun to use, automatically detecting the right recording speed for hyperlapses and letting us easily slip in and out of real-time footage at will. The folding, integrated mount makes mid-activity battery and memory card swaps a lot easier, too.

GoPro Hero7 Black

GoPro Hero7 Black

The best budget-friendly action camera

It’s the Hero8 Black but just a little less rad: It’s a tad less stabilized, its hyperlapses are less versatile, and you need a frame to use it with mounts.

If you’re content with not having the latest and greatest, the GoPro Hero7 Black is inferior to only one camera: its newest sibling, the GoPro Hero8 Black. To most eyes, the video you get out of the Hero7 Black camera will look just as sharp and colorful as footage from the Hero8 Black, and the stabilization is still at least as powerful as what you can get from anything else out there. TimeWarp clips are still breathtaking, even if you have to choose the recording speed yourself. Yeah, you have to keep the Hero7 Black in a frame if you want to mount it on handlebars, a paddle, or a helmet. But on the plus side, it has an HDMI port and a replaceable lens cover—two things the newer, more expensive GoPro lacks.
