The best mask is one that fits and that your child will be able to wear for most of the day, experts say. That means no single mask will work for all kids, and finding the right one for your child may take a lot of trial and error. We also can’t tell you which masks will definitely be the most effective at preventing the spread of coronavirus. But our research and testing has allowed us to identify a handful of kids masks that we think are good options to try, can be easily ordered online, and should ship fairly quickly. (If you’re looking for one for yourself, check out the advice in our guide to choosing adult face masks.)
Gap Kids Unisex Face Mask
A pleated crowd-pleaser
This soft, breathable three-layer mask fit (and pleased) kids in a range of ages. Made from woven cotton, it has a nose-bridge wire and longer ear loops, which helped it fit the faces of older kids.
(pack of 3)
City Threads Face Mask
Soft as a favorite T-shirt
This knit mask is the softest we tried; it feels like a favorite T-shirt. Though it’s made from only two layers of material, this mask feels dense. It comes in many colors and multiple sizes, but some kids couldn’t get a good fit.
Scout & Indiana Kids Face Mask
Charming prints, filter pocket
This two-layer, woven cotton mask has a filter pocket and adjustable ear loops, and it’s available in a selection of cheery, fun prints. This mask is cut a bit shorter, though, and it fit our younger testers better than our older ones.
Basic and inexpensive
This basic pleated mask is made from three layers of woven cotton and comes in a range of prints and colors. This was the best cheap mask we tried, and so it’s a good one to stock up on.
(pack of 5)
We recommend the pleated Gap Kids Unisex Face Mask. It has a nose-bridge wire, which helps achieve a good fit, and was well liked by kids ages 4 to 10 in our tests. We also recommend the comfy, cone-shaped City Threads Face Mask, which was the softest we tried and comes in multiple kid sizes; the hand-made, cone-shaped Scout & Indiana Kids Face Mask (the only one of our picks that has a filter pocket and comes in fun, colorful patterns); and the basic, inexpensive, pleated Old Navy Kids Mask, which is good for stocking up.
