We recommend the OXO Good Grips Food Mill for cooks who want to strain and puree foods into tomato sauce, applesauce, fruit jams, and more. While other mills can be tricky to assemble, the OXO snaps together with minimal effort. Its three legs allow you to position it securely over a wide range of bowls and pots, and they fold in for convenient storage. And although all the mills we tested yielded purees of similar texture, the OXO was one of the best at grabbing food and pushing it through the perforated plate. This model left behind minimal pulp, and we rarely needed to help things along with a spatula.

For occasional use, the RSVP Classic Rotary Food Mill is about half the price of the OXO and works nearly as well at pureeing, requiring just a little scraping with a spatula to push ingredients down under the blade. It’s a bit more difficult to assemble and disassemble than the OXO, and its plastic bowl isn’t as durable. Ingredients like tomatoes easily stain it, too. But it’s more stable and comfortable to use than other mills we tried, and it should hold up fine if you don’t plan to use it often.
