Plantronics BackBeat Fit 3150

Plantronics BackBeat Fit 3150

The best headphones for running

With a secure, unobtrusive fit, plus situational awareness, simple controls, and durability against sweat, these are hands-down our favorite pair of running earbuds.

Buying Options

$100* from Best Buy

No running headphones we’ve tried have performed better than the Plantronics BackBeat Fit 3150. While most unsealed earbuds lack bass completely, these have funnel-shaped ear tips that help produce a mild amount of bass—so they sound better than most unsealed headphones while still allowing you to hear your surroundings to stay safe. In addition, with an IP57 sweat/water/dust resistance rating, they can handle the elements. The flexible and textured hooks comfortably grip over your ears without chafing and play well with both sunglasses and hats. The customizable controls are simple to use, and the eight-hour battery life (per charge) will get you through several long runs. The case used for charging the earbuds adds 16 hours of battery life, though it’s a little too big to fit in the key pocket of your running shorts, so you may want to bring your running belt.

Plantronics BackBeat Fit 2100

Plantronics BackBeat Fit 2100

More affordable running headphones

These are tough, comfortable, and resistant to water and sweat, and they have a battery life of seven-plus hours. But the earbuds aren’t completely wireless.

Buying Options

$100* from Plantronics
$77 from Amazon

*At the time of publishing, the price was $50.

If you want to save money and don’t mind using wireless earbuds that are connected by a lightweight, flexible band, the Plantronics BackBeat Fit 2100 earbuds are comfortable and easy to use, and they sound quite good. Like the BackBeat Fit 3150, these earbuds have less sibilance and more bass than the vast majority of unsealed earbuds. The band between the two earbuds is long enough to accommodate any head size yet short enough that the slack won’t snag or bounce noisily when you’re jogging. Expect a battery life of seven-plus hours, but since these aren’t truly wireless, they don’t come with a charging case—you have to charge them with a cable. Overall, these aren’t as minimalist and satisfying to use as the 3150, but they still perform great and cost a lot less.
