How to shop for Cyber Monday smart-home gear

Smart devices are designed to make life easier. Voice-activated assistants that turn on your lights, thermostats that adjust your home’s temperature when you’re not around, and doorbell cameras that stream footage straight to your phone may not be essential—but they certainly are convenient.

Smart speakers, smart bulbs, smart locks, and just about everything else that you can control with your voice or smartphone will likely be on sale this Cyber Monday. With all these deals swirling in the ether, it can be hard to home in on what’s a great discount and what’s only pretending to be one. To help you separate the deals from the duds, we’ve rounded up the advice you need to shop confidently this Cyber Monday.

Smart-lighting deals were popular last year, with good prices on Wemo smart plugs and Philips Hue bulbs. This year, Wirecutter Deals editor Nathan Burrow predicts similar price drops. The Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance 2-Pack Starter Kit will likely drop to $80, while the 3-Pack Starter Kit could possibly fall to $100. Nathan also expects the Wemo Mini to drop to $18 or less. Some of the most interesting deals in this category last year were bundles that included smart speakers (such as a Google Home Mini or Amazon Echo Dot) with a smart plug or smart bulb. If you’re new to voice-controlled smart speakers, a bundle like that is a great way to start—and you’ll likely see some Echo-and-Philips bundles selling for anywhere between $35 for smaller bundles and $160 for larger bundles, making this an excellent time to test the smart-home waters.

Smart cameras are also popular this time of year, both as gifts and for yourself, especially if you’re interested in keeping an extra eye on your front porch to prevent package theft. Last year, we saw deals on Ring doorbell cameras, along with significant drops on Nest and Arlo security cams. This year is no different, as Nathan expects good deals on Nest products, with the Google Nest Protect likely dropping to $85, the Nest Hello video doorbell dropping to $155 or less, and the Google Nest Cam Outdoor and Google Nest Hub for under $200. The Arlo Pro 2 is also expected to fall to $200.

If you’ve been on the hunt for a smart thermostat, Nathan expects to see deals in that category too: The Ecobee4 Smart Thermostat will likely fall to $170 or less, while the Nest Thermostat with Temperature Sensors will probably sell for $200.

Smart displays are a fairly new category, one that both Google and Amazon want to push, so we expect that deals on those items should be easy to find, especially the new Google Nest Hub and Google Nest Hub Max. Though there will be ample deals, Nathan points out that many of the early Cyber Monday deals we’ve seen for smart displays have come from somewhat unreliable sellers. When you’re browsing deals, be mindful of who’s offering them.
