ZMI PowerPack 20000

ZMI PowerPack 20000

The best USB power bank for laptops

The ZMI PowerPack 20000 can charge phones and most laptops, and it was the only one we tested that properly charged Asus Chromebooks. It doubles as a hub, adding extra ports to your laptop, and it weighs less than a pound.

The ZMI PowerPack 20000 is the total package. This model’s hub functionality—an uncommon feature that we insisted on for the laptop-focused power banks in this guide because we think it’s particularly useful—lets you recharge a laptop over the USB-C Power Delivery (PD) port while also powering or transferring data to your other devices over its two USB-A 2.0 ports. If you have a laptop that has only USB-C ports, this means you don’t need separate adapters to use USB-A devices such as wired mice or keyboards.

The PowerPack 20000 has enough battery capacity to fully charge laptops such as the 13-inch MacBook Pro at least once or a smartphone like the iPhone X about four times. Though some computers need more power to charge at maximum speeds, the PowerPack 20000’s 40-watt output is powerful enough to work with a wide range of laptops, from smaller Chromebooks that require only 20 W to larger MacBook Pros that demand 87 W. The PowerPack 20000 was also the only power bank we tested that readily charged our favorite Asus Chromebooks at the proper speeds. It has a sleek, sophisticated look for a power bank and a shape that’s roughly the width and length of an iPhone X but thicker, and it weighs less than a pound.

Maximum USB-C output: 40 watts
Maximum USB-C input: 60 watts
Number of USB-A ports: two

ZMI PowerPack 20K Pro

ZMI PowerPack 20K Pro

Better for high-powered laptops

This sleek, slim charger has two USB-A ports and a USB-C PD port that lets you charge most laptops (and the charger itself) with up to 60 W of power.

If you have a power-hungry laptop such as a 15-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pro and want to charge it while running lots of programs, the ZMI PowerPack 20K Pro is better suited to your needs than the PowerPack 20000. It’s nearly identical, except it offers a higher maximum output (60 watts) than any other portable charger we’ve tested. It’s not our top pick because it won’t offer a noticeable improvement for most people with 13-inch or smaller laptops that don’t need the extra power, and at this writing it costs more. But the PowerPack 20K Pro is a great option if you need that extra boost of power, or if our top pick is out of stock.

Like the PowerPack 20000, the PowerPack 20K Pro doubles as a hub, so you can plug keyboards or flash drives into the USB-A ports too. Just like its twin, it weighs less than a pound (14 ounces), and it’s slim and sleek enough for you to slip it easily into a backpack or briefcase pocket. It also has the same capacity and the same USB-A output ports.

Zendure X6

Zendure X6

If you need extra ports

Even though the X6 is a bit bulky, it adds features that make it a great laptop companion, including four USB-A ports, a USB-C PD port, and an LED display screen that shows how much charge is left. It wasn’t compatible with the Asus Chromebooks we tested.

The Zendure X6 is a great option if you have a lot of accessories to charge and to connect to your laptop. Like both ZMI models, it has two USB-A ports that you can use for both power and data when you plug the power bank into your laptop with USB-C, but it adds two charge-only USB-A ports as well. The X6 charges and recharges at 45 W over its USB-C PD port, so it’s powerful enough to charge a wide range of laptops.

And it’s the only model we tested that shows the remaining charge on a numerical gauge, in contrast to the four little lights every other power bank has. Plus, its rated capacity (20,100 mAh) and maximum output (45 W) are as high as in any model we tested. In our tests, however, it failed to charge two different Asus Chromebook models correctly, so we don’t recommend the X6 with that line of laptops.

Maximum USB-C input: 45 watts
Number of USB-A ports: four

Zendure X6 30 W 40 W 40 W 7 W 7 W
These are the approximate charging speeds we observed, in watts, when testing our picks with popular laptops. Most laptops with USB-C are standardized, so laptops from major brands such as Apple, Dell, and Lenovo will all work fine. But if you have an Asus Chromebook, at the moment we recommend only the ZMI PowerPack 20000; USB-C Power Delivery didn’t work correctly on the Zendure X6 with either of the Asus Chromebooks we used in testing. We haven’t yet tested the ZMI PowerPack 20K Pro with either Asus Chromebook, but we will update this guide as soon as we do.
